Sik Gaek Project
The name of movie was ‘Sik-gaek’ (English name is ‘La grand Chef’, TV Series’ title was ‘Gourmet’). The movie was based on a cartoon of the same name. I had known the cartoon and I was not a big fan of the cartoon. But after getting a Korean cook certification, I was surprised by the movie. I became skeptical about Korean food at that time. I felt disappointed in myself and I just thought that cooking is just making food. But in the movie, they were making ‘Minari kang hwae’(미나리 강회). It is a kind of roll made of dropwort and beef and eggs.
During the training, it was one of the trivial menus. I tried to make it beautiful, but it was not. I just felt disappointed and rationalized that it is originally such a food, then I didn’t have interest about that. But while watching the movie, I doubted my eyes. It was so beautiful. And other same menu which I tried were also fantastic than my prejudice. I felt shame about my certification. I thought that I didn’t deserve to get that. I realized that cooking is not trivial, just making food, it is a kind of art!
So I made up my mind to start to grind and practice to cook more. It might take my whole life, but I really want to know about Korean food. It was hard to find specialty and preciousness in Korean food, because I have lived in Korea, it made us accustomed to the food without fresh feeling. But the more study about food, the more I was being shocked by varieties of Korean food and superiority. I want to let people know about Korean food all over the world.
The Happy Sikgaek Project is the study and jorney to Korean food.
